What is International Women’s Day?
International Women’s Day (March 8th) is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day calls on collective action to accelerate gender parity, celebrate women’s achievements, and rally for women’s equality.
International Women’s Day (IWD) is a day to:
- celebrate women’s achievements
- raise awareness about women’s equality
- lobby for accelerated gender parity
- fundraise for female-focused charities
What is the theme for International Women’s Day 2022?
IWD Theme: The theme for International Women’s Day 2022 is #BreakTheBias. Whether deliberate or unconscious, bias makes it difficult for women to move ahead. Knowing that bias exists isn’t enough. Action is needed to level the playing field.
IWD Tech Mission: To elevate and advance gender parity in technology and celebrate the women forging innovation.
“Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women’s equality. Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.”
The 2021 UN theme for International Women’s Day is “gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”, recognizing the contribution of women and girls around the world, who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response, to build a more sustainable future for all.
Additional hashtags will be #IWD2022 and #InternationalWomensDay.
Does International Women’s Day still matter?
Yes! There’s no place for complacency. According to the World Economic Forum, gender parity will not be attained for almost a century. This sadly means we will not see gender parity in our lifetime, and it’s unlikely our children will either.
We have come far and there is still a long way to go – and we all have a critical role to play.
